Revelation – the Seven Trumpets

The First Trumpet

Hail and fire mixed with blood was hurled onto the earth. 1/3 of the world was burned, 1/3 of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass burned up.

The Second Trumpet

Something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. 1/3 of the sea turned into blood, 1/3 of the living creatures in the sea died, 1/3 of the ship were destroyed.

The Third Trumpet

A great star, Wormwood, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a 1/3 of the rivers and on the springs of water. 1/3 of the waters turned bitter and many people died from the waters.

The Forth Trumpet

1/3 of the sun, moon and stars struck turning 1/3 of them dark. The result was that 1/3 of the day and night without light.

The Fifth Trumpet (First Woe)

A star that fell from the sky to the earth, and was given key to the shaft of the Abyss. That “star” opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it, darkening the sun and sky.

From the Abyss there came “locusts”, given power to torture people (excluding those who have the seal of God on their foreheads) for five months.

The description of the locusts are pretty fantastical. The leader of the locusts is the angel of the Abyss (Abaddon in Hebrew, Apollyon or destroyer in Greek).

The Sixth Trumpet (Second Woe)

The four angels bound at the river of Euphrates were released. They were given power to kill 1/3 of all people. They were accompanied by 200 million troops. They killed people through the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulphur.

The key point to note here is that despite the torture, the killing, people did not repent of their idol and demon worship, their murders, magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts.

The Seventh Trumpet (Third and Final Woe).

The nations are angry, and God’s wrath has come. Time of judgment of the dead, and for the rewarding of God’s servants, prophets and people who revere His name. And destruction for those who destroy the earth (cf we as God’s steward of the earth need to look after it, not exploit it, but this doesn’t mean we cannot benefit from it).

God’s temple in heaven was then opened, and the ark of his covenant could be seen. And there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder, an earthquake and a severe hailstorm.
